Bible Study: Epesians Chapter 5

Chapter 5

V1  followers 3402––imitators
as dear children

Children love to imitate, especially their parents.  In fact it is very natural for them to do so.  That is how they learn the "stuff" of life.  If parents are good and doing good, children will want to embrace that.  If parents are mean, criticizing, and not doing what is right, it is the natural tendency for a child to imitate that behavior.  If a parent is acting in such a way that a child doesn’t want to be like, too often they are so focused on not being like the parent that they end up taking on the characteristics of the parent.  Children make lasting decisions when they are very young.

In order to embrace correct behavior the child needs to (we need to) keep looking at Jesus.  Hebrews 12:2 states “Looking unto Jesus the Author and Finisher of faith, Who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross…”
Philippians 4:8 Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think of these things.
1 Thessalonians 5:22 Abstain from all appearance of evil
Ephesians 5:18-20 and be not drunk with wine, wherein i excess, but be filled with the Spirit, speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord; giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ;

Be imitators–followers of Him.

Matthew 5:44-45 But I say unto you, ‘Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you; that you may be the children of your Father which is in heaven:  for He makes His sun to rise on the evil and on the good and sends rain on the just and on the unjust.’

We are to imitate God––

V2 walk in love as Christ loved us

John 13:34-35 A new commandment I give unto you, that you love one another as I have loved you, that you also love one another.  By this shall all know you are my disciples, if you have love one to another.

How did He love us?

 unselfishly
 gave all
 unconditionally
 gave Himself for us
 an offering
 a sacrifice to God
 a sweetsmelling savor (fragrance)

Old Testament commandment is Leviticus 19:18  ‘…but you shall love your neighbor as yourself:  I am the Lord.’  Reading the verses before and after we can see it basically means, ‘And as you would that men should do to you, do you also to them likewise.’ Luke 6:31.
Matthew’s gospel says it this way in 7:12 ‘ Therefore all things whatsoever you would that men should do to you, do you even so to them:  for this is the law and the prophets.’  The center column reference refers to Leviticus 19:18.

Jesus’ new commandment is a higher law and takes the strength of the Lord to do.  Christ in us, us in Christ.  He made it possible!!

longing, desire.  A feminine noun meaning longing.  It was used to describe the strong feelings of desire that one person had for another, but it was not always a healthy desire.  As part of the judgment after Adam's and Eve's sin, God said that a woman would long for her husband (G.3:16).  Eve wanted her husband’s place.  People are not the only thing that can long:  God told Cain that sin was lying at his door, desiring to enter (Genesis 4:7).
