Bible Study: Epesians Chapter 5

Chapter 5

V1  followers 3402––imitators
as dear children

Children love to imitate, especially their parents.  In fact it is very natural for them to do so.  That is how they learn the "stuff" of life.  If parents are good and doing good, children will want to embrace that.  If parents are mean, criticizing, and not doing what is right, it is the natural tendency for a child to imitate that behavior.  If a parent is acting in such a way that a child doesn’t want to be like, too often they are so focused on not being like the parent that they end up taking on the characteristics of the parent.  Children make lasting decisions when they are very young.

In order to embrace correct behavior the child needs to (we need to) keep looking at Jesus.  Hebrews 12:2 states “Looking unto Jesus the Author and Finisher of faith, Who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross…”
Philippians 4:8 Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think of these things.
1 Thessalonians 5:22 Abstain from all appearance of evil
Ephesians 5:18-20 and be not drunk with wine, wherein i excess, but be filled with the Spirit, speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord; giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ;

Be imitators–followers of Him.

Matthew 5:44-45 But I say unto you, ‘Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you; that you may be the children of your Father which is in heaven:  for He makes His sun to rise on the evil and on the good and sends rain on the just and on the unjust.’

We are to imitate God––

V2 walk in love as Christ loved us

John 13:34-35 A new commandment I give unto you, that you love one another as I have loved you, that you also love one another.  By this shall all know you are my disciples, if you have love one to another.

How did He love us?

 unselfishly
 gave all
 unconditionally
 gave Himself for us
 an offering
 a sacrifice to God
 a sweetsmelling savor (fragrance)

Old Testament commandment is Leviticus 19:18  ‘…but you shall love your neighbor as yourself:  I am the Lord.’  Reading the verses before and after we can see it basically means, ‘And as you would that men should do to you, do you also to them likewise.’ Luke 6:31.
Matthew’s gospel says it this way in 7:12 ‘ Therefore all things whatsoever you would that men should do to you, do you even so to them:  for this is the law and the prophets.’  The center column reference refers to Leviticus 19:18.

Jesus’ new commandment is a higher law and takes the strength of the Lord to do.  Christ in us, us in Christ.  He made it possible!!

longing, desire.  A feminine noun meaning longing.  It was used to describe the strong feelings of desire that one person had for another, but it was not always a healthy desire.  As part of the judgment after Adam's and Eve's sin, God said that a woman would long for her husband (G.3:16).  Eve wanted her husband’s place.  People are not the only thing that can long:  God told Cain that sin was lying at his door, desiring to enter (Genesis 4:7).

Galatians 5:22-23 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance:  against such there is no law.
Colossians 3:12-17 Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering; forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if any man have a quarrel against any:  even as Christ forgave you, so also you do.  And above all these things put on charity, which is the bond of perfectness.  And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to the which also you are called in one body; and be thankful.  Let the Word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.  And whatsoever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by Him.

This is not usually this cut and dried.  Sometimes one person does more than one of  these offices, sometimes more than one person, each with an offices or offices, goes in and there is an over-lap––which is probably more common way.

compacted 4822––sumbouleuo––to drive together, i.e. unite in association, affection, mentally, to infer, show, teach.  assuredly gather, intrust, knit together, prove.  This word comes from two words:  4862 sun––union, with or together (but much closer) completeness.  and bibazo––to force

Wuest:  "Expositors sums it up by saying, " The idea appears to be that the body is fitly framed and knit together by means of the joints, every one of them in its own place and function, as the points of connection between member and member, and the points of communication between the different parts and the supply which comes from the Head.  The joints are the constituents of union in the body and the media of the impartation of the life drawn by the members from the head."
Translation.  But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into Him in all things, Who is the Head, Christ, from Whom all the body constantly being joined closely together and constantly being knit together through every joint of supply according to the operative energy put forth to the capacity of each part, makes for increased growth of the Body resulting in the building up of itself in the sphere of love.

It is the same with people's lives:  we want to put good into them, not take away or tear down.  Think of it as this:  whenever you come in contact with a person, think how you can put good into them as building a well built building.  Your words build up or tear down.  Body language does the same thing.

neither give place to the devil

quietness––freedom from noise, agitation, disturbance, or excitement.  Stillness, tranquility

 opposite of war–peace of mind
health, welfare, prosperity, every kind of good.
Luke 1:79:  the way of peace means the way of happiness
Luke 2:14 and Luke 10:6 means Son of Peace–the One worthy of it; the One Who gives it.

Hebrews 4:11 Labor therefore to enter into rest lest any man fall after the same example of unbelief (should be disobedience).
Labor—4704 spoudazo (spoo-dad-zo), to use speed, i.e. make an effort, be prompt and earnest; give diligence to, endeavor

If a person has received Jesus as Lord and Savior, they must DO IT.  This (this verse-Philippians 2:9-15, v12) does not mean to make ones own way to Heaven, it means they must implement God’s Word into their lives and DO IT.  The rest comes as a person “works” for it; as the person implements God’s Word in their lives, as they grow in grace and in His Word, as they learn to do this and put Him first, then the rest comes.  2 Timothy 2:15 Study to show yourself approved unto God, a workman that needs not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the Word of Truth.

All the New Testament letters, the Pauline Epistles, start this way:  "Grace be to you and peace from God our Father and from The Lord Jesus Christ." Grace is always required first before peace because for peace to happen there must be a change in the heart and life of a person.  No matter what life-style a person lives it can be changed by God through Jesus Christ by being Born Again.  Peace comes from God and must be received, and can only be maintained through Jesus:  walking with Him by the Word and prayer.

Jesus went up to Heaven but we are in Christ:  Ephesians––in Christ, in Him, etc.
Jesus is in us:  1 Corinthians 13:5, Galatians 2:20, Ephesians 3:17, Colossians 1:27

God pronounces blessings (eulogy, verbal blessing).  He makes it from His throne and it is heard in the highest Heaven—His Home, also the place where the devil and demons are, and on earth.  His Words always come to pass.  We should receive what He says.  Most of it is written in His Word––the Bible.  Believe it and receive it!  Then you will see needs met, direction given, protection,
