Bible Study in Psalms Chapters 3 and 4

Psalms Chapters Three and Four

We are just finishing up our study in the Ladies Bible study at my church on Psalms 3 and 4.  These two chapters are prayers that David prayed when he was running for his life from his son, Absalom.

I started this study by going back to the Old Testament starting with IISamuel 11 and looked at how this all started with Bathsheba.  Sin has it's consequences and even though a person repents, as you will see here with David, there is still a high price to pay.  Not too long ago, I heard this quip:  "It is easier to repent than to do what is right now."  People say this because they want to get away with doing something they want to do that is wrong.  And They think they can do it and just repent and it will be all over with.  How deceived they are and  how VERY UN-TRUE that is and you will see this in this study.

This study is a long one.  I have it in 5 parts including the questions:

  • The first part begins back in II Samuel chapters 11 through chapter 18.  In this we will talk about how David's troubles started.  And what a mess he put his family and friends in.
  • The second part discusses marriage from Ephesians.  In this we show the difference of love and lust.  We discuss the truth about each.
  • The third, is a discussion on the weapons of our warfare, for we NEED to know how to battle the enemy which includes his temptations and the battle for the mind.  Since we cannot avoid the temptations, the Lord shows us what to do about them.
  • Psalm 51 is David's heartfelt repentant prayer to the Lord for what he did to Bathsheba, Uriah, her husband and especially to the Lord.
  • The study questions.

I have so thoroughly enjoyed doing this study.  It is my prayer that you will enjoy it and will glean from it.  I have done this study from the King James Version of the Bible and have also used the Complete Jewish Bible, so the word studies do come mostly from the KJV.  As always I want to encourage you to trust Jesus with your whole being for He loves you so very much and has you in His heart.  If you have any questions about this study you can write me at the address given in the "About Me" section.  Now the study!

Chapter 4

V1  Two things David is asking the Lord here: to hear him when he calls and to have mercy upon him.  Noticed that he asks the Lord twice to hear him.  I believe he was desperate to know the Lord will hear him once again.  He calls God his Righteousness.  Rightly so.  None of us can be righteous in our own selves.  We can only be righteous with God righteousness, by receiving Jesus Christ, God's Son, as our Lord and Savior and being obedient to what He asks us to do.

V2  David ask 3 things of the sons of men-those who do not belong to the Lord.  The first he ask about what they have done to him:  "How long will you turn my glory into shame?"  Those who don't love the Lord or want anything to do with Him will harass and just wear people out with badgering and jeering and all kinds of abuse.

The next two questions are about themselves:  "How long will you love vanity?"  The people that are not Born-again are only concerned with themselves.  How much money they can grab, power and to rule over others at any lengths, at any sacrifice.  It is ME, ME, ME thinking.

The other question that pertains to them is, " How long will you seek after leasing?"  Leasing means 'deceit'.  The question could be asked like this:  "How long will you keep seeking to deceive others?"  and actually themselves too!

V3 Godly- used 2 x of God-work, beyond reproach Psalm 145:17 and to
declare Jeremiah 3:12. All the rest usually refer to those who reflect
the character of God in their actions and personality.

V4 Stand in awe to grieve with anger, disquiet. Jewish Bible Ephesians
4:26, “You can be angry, but do not sin!”
Still-to dumb, to stop, hold [your] peace, quiet [your] self. J.B. “and calm

V5 offer sacrifices rightly Psalm 116:17-18; Jeremiah 33:11; Hebrews 13:15
Righteousness- a right relationship
Trust-put confidence in; be confident or sure Psalm 62:8

Part 4 David's prayer of repentance

Psalm 51 (Complete Jewish Bible)
1 For the leader. A psalm of David, when Natan the prophet came to him after
his affair with Bat-Sheva: God, in your grace, have mercy on me; in your
great compassion, blot out my crimes.
2 Wash me completely from my guilt, and cleanse me from my sin.
3 For I know my crimes, my sin confronts me all the time.
4 Against you, you only, have I sinned and done what is evil from your
perspective; so that you are right in accusing me and justified in passing
5 True, I was born guilty, was a sinner from the moment my mother
conceived me.
6 Still, you want truth in the inner person; so make me know wisdom in my
inmost heart.
7 Sprinkle me with hyssop, and I will be clean; wash me, and I will be whiter
than snow.
8 Let me hear the sound of joy and gladness, so that the bones you crushed
can rejoice.
9 Turn away your face from my sins, and blot out all my crimes.
10 Create in me a clean heart, God; renew in me a resolute spirit.
11 Don't thrust me away from your presence, don't take your Ruach Kodesh
away from me.
12 Restore my joy in your salvation, and let a willing spirit uphold me.
13 Then I will teach the wicked your ways, and sinners will return to you.
14 Rescue me from the guilt of shedding blood, God, God of my salvation!
Then my tongue will sing about your righteousness
15 Adonai, open my lips; then my mouth will praise you.
16 For you don't want sacrifices, or I would give them; you don't take
pleasure in burnt offerings. 17 My sacrifice to God is a broken spirit; God,
you won't spurn a broken, chastened heart.
18 In your good pleasure, make Tziyon prosper; rebuild the walls of
19 Then you will delight in righteous sacrifices, in burnt offerings and whole
