????Resolutions???

Ever made a New Years resolution and never kept it--well for very long anyway? I think most people have.  Sometimes they give up on making new ones because of failures to keep the ones they tried to commit too.  It can be very discouraging;  wanting to make changes and just can't seem to make it happen.   Other people keep making resolutions hoping that one day the changes happens and sticks.

Our Pastor a couple of Sundays back had a great sermon on the subject and I think the answer to making changes in our lives and being the overcomers that God intended for us to be.  He had a different take on the verses from Luke chapter 11 and verses 33 through 36.  This is what Jesus says:

"No one lights a lamp and then hides it or puts it under a basket.  Instead, a lamp is placed on a stand, where its light can be seen by all who enter the house.  Your eye is a lamp that provides light for your body.  When your eye is good, your whole body is filled with light.  But when it s bad, your body is filled with darkness.  Make sure that the light you have is not actually darkness.  If you are filled with light, with no dark corners, then your whole life will be radiant, as though a floodlight were filling you will light."

One common teaching on this verser is, putting it short, 'Let your light shine.'  In other words, 'Let Jesus shine through you so others see Him in your life.'  This is very true and very important.  But there is another teaching is either isn't known or ignored.

It is the way we look out at things.  When you are looking out a window at a gorgeous view, one reason you can see it is because of the windows you are looking through are clean--hopefully  :-D   If they are not clean it make the gorgeous view less gorgeous.  If the windows are caked with mud and grime, the view cannot be seen.

The Bible says that our eyes are windows.  And like windows of a building, if they are grimy it hinders what we see.  If we have been hurt very deeply, that hurt is like the grime we have to look through and taints what we see.  Jesus wants us to view life, which includes people who have hurt us, as He sees them.  Laying aside our hurts and have compassion.  Most often the reason why people hurt us is because they have been hurt themselves and the level of trust is lower than should be.  To change a situation we must change ourselves, hence comes the resolutions that we try to keep and fail over and over again.

Our Pastor had 5 points that are very critical for change.  Here they are:

1)  Realize what the problem is in your life.  Call it what it is.
2)  Refuse to make excuses for it.  Don't say 'well that is just they way I am.'  Don't let outside forces determine your attitude.
3)  Pray.  At this point he said, "You may ask, 'shouldn't prayer be first?'   Well if you don't acknowledge the first two points prayer is useless."  And you can pray something like, 'Lord I have done this for so long I need your help' or what ever pertains to the situation.
4)  Push in the opposite direction.  This is the tough part.  If it is fear--act out bravery.  If it facing people who are rude--be courteous.  If you are lean toward yelling--push to be calm.  What ever the negative is--push in the positive direction.
5)  Spend time with people who view the opposite than you.  In other words spend time with people who live in the way you want to be.  People who are courageous.  People who are calm.  People who view life in a good, clear, and godly way.

When we have a godly outlook on life and view others the way God sees them then our light that is in us will shine brightly out to others to see clearly.  They will then 'ask of the hope that lies within us.'  And because of us being the overcomers in this life that He wants us to be, we then can be the witnesses He wants us to be.

Let us endeavor to push in the opposite direction of our faults and failures and be the overcomer God wants us to be and not let the enemy of our souls get the victory over us.  Let's get the victory over the enemy.  God wants us to WIN!!  God bless!!
